We’re taking a moment to shine some light on an important organization and all they’re doing for our North Texas community. The Samaritan Inn is the largest and leading homeless program in Collin County. Since 1984, The Samaritan Inn has been working hard to provide necessary and often overlooked services to people experiencing homelessness. Their program provides more than just room and board.

Focusing on the whole person, they address the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual needs of those accepted into the program. Samaritan’s mission is to help willing people gain dignity and independence, moving families from a survival perspective to experiencing growth in health, normalcy, and security in their everyday lives.

On average, over 400 Collin County residents are homeless. 150 are children without a home.

You may be surprised to learn homelessness is an issue here in north Texas, but every single day people arrive at the Samaritan Inn facing extreme poverty with nowhere to go. Their 160 beds stay full most nights; a third of those residents are children under the age of 14. Many more are turned away due to a growing need in the community.

Thankfully, Samaritan has answered the call to grow. Construction is underway for new facilities to allow more programs and services for many more people!  Our team enjoyed the opportunity to serve lunch to their residents, learn about the Inn’s plans for expansion, and tour the current facilities earlier this spring. The hospitable Inn staff revealed the many facets of the Samaritan program in place that allow families to graduate from the Inn and move on to live independent, self-sustaining lives!

Afternoons at the Inn, lunch with Laura.

The AquaTerra ladies also recently attended Samaritan’s annual Inn Bloom fundraiser where former First Lady Laura Bush shared her heart for those in need and remembered beloved former First Lady Barbara Bush. Laura filled the room with laughter as she and WFAA’s Jane McGarry discussed life in and after the White House, the joys of grandchildren, and life lessons from Barbara.

If you’ve not visited Samaritan Inn’s website, please take a moment to learn more about their unique approach to restoring dignity and independence in the lives of those in crisis…  Vital programs career, interview, and resume training, financial education classes,  and a veterinarian-supported pet program- are in place so families in crisis don’t have to lose their pets while working through this transition. We’re excited for Samaritan’s next chapter as they build, grow, and expand to meet the growing needs of our community.
