That’s why Emser Tile is a key partner for so many of our outdoor projects.

Emser’s expertise in creating tile suited for various outdoor elements aligns seamlessly with AquaTerra’s standards of excellence. So, for this blog, we went straight to the experts at Emser Tile to gain insight into choosing the right tile for outdoor living spaces!

Let’s start with the question we’re all thinking, what distinguishes outdoor tile from indoor tile?

Outdoor tile is specifically designed to withstand the unique challenges of outdoor environments, like exposure to weather, temperature changes, and moisture. Outdoor tiles are crafted to be more durable and often made from dense materials like porcelain or natural stone. They are also rated to handle heavy traffic and resist cracking under temperature fluctuations.

Indoor tiles, on the other hand, are often made of ceramic and are not as robust as porcelain and natural stone.  Since indoor tiles are sheltered from the elements, they do not need to withstand the same level of water absorption, slip resistance and temperature fluctuations as outdoor tiles. However, the requirements can vary based on where they are used – kitchens and bathrooms, for example, typically need tiles with higher slip resistance for added safety.

We also, asked our experts at Emser to share the key factors to consider when selecting tiles for outdoor use.

When deciding which tiles are best suited for indoor or outdoor use, there are several factors to consider ensuring you select products that meet both functional and aesthetic needs. Water absorption is the first thing to assess. Porcelain tile has a ≤0.5% water absorption (with ASTM C373 testing), making it perfect for both indoors and outdoors. Their low absorption rate makes them highly resistant to moisture, which is crucial for tiles exposed to rain or humidity.

Next, evaluate slip resistance, particularly if the tile will be exposed to water, like around pools or on uncovered patios. This can be done by referring to ANSI A326.3 DCOF (Dynamic Coefficient of Friction) test results.  Typically for pool decks you will look for products having a DCOF of ≥0.60, while other outdoor projects that are uncovered and exposed to the elements look for tiles with a ≥0.55 DCOF rating. Another consideration is R11-rated products, which provide a higher level of slip resistance suitable for either of these applications.

Tiles used outdoors should also be resistant to chemicals and UV light. Chemical Resistance (ASTM C650) is essential if the area will be exposed to harsh cleaning products, while UV Stability ensures the tile’s color won’t fade under direct sunlight. For these reasons, metallic tiles are rarely recommended for exterior applications, as they typically lack UV stability and may not perform well under outdoor conditions.

By considering these factors, you will be able to select a tile that not only complements your design vision but is also built to withstand the demands of its environment.

Choosing tile for outdoor spaces involves many factors, some of which may not be widely known. Emser Tile shared insights on what key considerations homeowners should keep in mind.

Selecting the right tile is essential to achieving both style and functionality in your outdoor space. Make sure your tile choice meets the specific requirements of the project – such as water absorption and slip resistance. As mentioned above these tests help ensure that the tiles you choose are safe, durable, and suitable for outdoor conditions.

When choosing a pool builder or supplier, look for one who genuinely listens to your vision and understands the kind of backyard experience you want to create. A great builder will explore all options with you, guide you on what tiles will work best for your specific project needs, and will help you discover possibilities you might not have considered – all while staying within your budget. The right partner can make the process smooth and enjoyable, bringing your dream outdoor space to life.

Lastly, to keep our audience up-to-date with the latest in outdoor design, we asked the experts about the outdoor tile trends currently gaining popularity.

As outdoor pools trend toward more geometric and rectangular shapes, they are creating a sleek, modern aesthetic that complements contemporary homes. Linear tile designs and subtle tones are perfect for these spaces, blending seamlessly with the overall style and enhancing the indoor-to-outdoor flow. This approach expands your backyard into an extension of your living space, making it feel like a cohesive part of your home.

With a well-designed backyard, homeowners spend an impressive 30% of their time enjoying their outdoor space – weather permitting, of course! By integrating modern design elements, you can create an inviting, stylish environment that draws you outside, increasing both the functionality and beauty of your home.
