Located in the prestigious Preston Hollow neighborhood, the Surrey Oaks project is a striking example of how thoughtful design, precise engineering, and refined craftsmanship can come together to create a truly exceptional outdoor environment. Designed by The Garden Design Studio, built by Milan Custom Build, and envisioned by SmithArc, this project showcases AquaTerra Outdoors’ expertise in constructing a complex, high-elevation outdoor space that perfectly complements the home’s modern architecture.
Set on a site with significant elevation change—uncommon for the Dallas area—the design takes full advantage of the natural topography. The approach from the street gradually rises toward a bold architectural entry that establishes a sense of drama and anticipation. Below this entry sits a basement level featuring a glass-and-steel atrium that opens the space to light while connecting the indoors to the surrounding landscape. Massive stone blocks anchor the design and echo the natural cliffside that once defined the property, while a flowing creek below enhances the site’s connection to its original terrain.
Because of the slope and soil conditions, drainage and structural integrity were key considerations throughout the design and construction process. AquaTerra’s team engineered each element to perform seamlessly—balancing beauty with technical precision.
At the heart of the outdoor space is a 54-foot-long, 17-foot-wide perimeter overflow pool, a defining focal point that mirrors the architectural rhythm of the home. Water flows over all edges of the pool, creating a continuous reflective surface that captures the light and sky above. The dark pool finish heightens this mirror-like effect, adding depth and sophistication to the design. Beneath the surface, the pool’s structure is reinforced with grade beams running in all directions, supported by void boxes and piers set deep into bedrock to prevent movement over time and ensure lasting stability.
Complementing the pool, extensive retaining walls provide both form and function, reinforcing the slope while adding structure and layering to the space. Each wall is anchored by deep footers and piers to withstand the site’s elevation changes and soil expansion, ensuring the environment remains secure and enduring.
Material selection was equally intentional. Locally sourced tiles from Knox Tile add a subtle shimmer to the water’s surface, while natural stonework ties the outdoor design seamlessly to the home’s architecture.
The result is a dynamic outdoor environment that blends engineering precision with aesthetic refinement. From the elevated approach to the dramatic pool terrace, every detail of Surrey Oaks was designed and built to create a livable, modern retreat—one that celebrates elevation, craftsmanship, and the art of outdoor living.
